12-Year-Old Girl Gives Birth To A 600-Pound Mare
A 12-year-old girl in Hunan Province, China, has given birth to a 600-pound mare. The girl, who weighs only 88 pounds, says that she was unaware that she was pregnant until she went into labor.
Neighbors report that the horse is healthy and doing well. The girl has not yet decided what to do with the horse, but she may keep it as a pet or sell it. This is not the first time a young girl has given birth to an animal; in 2011, an 11-year-old girl in India gave birth to a crocodile.
Iowa Woman Gives Birth To 15.3 Handed Mare
A Iowa Woman has given birth to a 15.3-handed mare, her seventh consecutive offspring of the record-breaking kind. Mrs. Louella Darlene, who is a resident of the small town of Pella in Iowa, has been breeding horses for the last eleven years and claims that every one of her foals has been born with an above average number of hands.
"At first we were worried that something might be wrong with them," Mrs. Darlene says, "But after doing some research on the internet we found out that this is actually a pretty common phenomenon among horses." Indeed, according to a study conducted by the University of Edinburgh, horse owners have reported an incidence rate of 15.3% for extra-limb births in horses.
While it is still not entirely clear why some horses are born with more than the standard four appendages, researchers believe that it may be due to a genetic mutation or exposure to certain types of radiation. In any case, Mrs. Darlene is just happy that her horses are healthy and seem to be adapting well to their extra limbs. "They're just like any other horse except they have a little bit more trouble picking things up off the ground," she says laughing.
The Darlene family has plans to enter their latest foal, a beautiful black mare named Lilliput, into next year's edition of the Guinness World Records book. And if all goes well, she could very well be crowned as the world's mostappendaged horse.
Ottawa Mom Gives Birth to 48 Inch Tall, 181 Pound Miniature Horse
When Ottawa mom Laurie Holzman gave birth to her 48-inch tall, 181-pound miniature horse last month, she had no idea just how big he would turn out. "We were all totally shocked when he came out," said Holzman. "He was the size of a regular horse!"
Holzman and her husband, who are both experienced horse breeders, say they've never seen anything like it. The newborn colt is now the size of a small pony and is already winning first prize in local shows.
Miniature horses are bred for their small size – typically topping out at around 34 inches in height and around 100 pounds in weight. So what accounts for this colt's unusually large size?
It could be due to the fact that his parents are both of average height, or it could be a genetic fluke. But either way, Laurie and her husband say they are just thrilled with their new arrival.
"He's definitely a one-of-a-kind horse and we plan to keep him busy winning championships for years to come!"
